For Women 40+

If Your Stomach Keeps You Up at Night, Another Sleep Supplement May Be Missing the Point

Many women spend years trying to make themselves sleepier — while bloating, heaviness, gas and an unsettled stomach still follow them into bed resulting in bad sleep quality...

Here's what I look for when digestive discomfort has become part of the nighttime problem.

An evidence-aware review of digestion, the gut–sleep connection, and one daily digestive-support formula worth considering.

Maybe You Don't Have "Just a Sleep Problem"

You're exhausted. You get into bed expecting sleep to come easily, because you've been tired all day.

But the moment everything gets quiet, your stomach suddenly seems very loud.

The pressure. The bloating. The bubbling. The feeling that dinner is still sitting there. Maybe reflux. Maybe gas. Maybe you simply describe it as a busy stomach.

So you adjust. Dinner gets earlier. Portions get smaller. Certain foods disappear completely. You stop eating after 7 or 8 PM, because you've learned that one wrong meal can decide between a decent night and hours of lying awake.

Then come the sleep remedies. Melatonin. Magnesium. L-theanine. Herbal products. Maybe antihistamines. Maybe prescription medication. And sometimes they do exactly what they're supposed to do: they make you drowsy.

But there is a difference between feeling drowsy and feeling comfortable enough to settle into a normal night. Women describing this problem rarely say they need something stronger to knock them out. They say things like:

"My stomach won't settle down."

"I wake up tired."

"I've tried everything."

"I just want to sleep normally again."

That distinction matters.

If digestive discomfort is part of what makes your nights difficult, supporting digestion deserves a place in the conversation too.

Why I Pay Attention to What Happens Before Bedtime

Sarah Mitchell, MS, RDN

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist | Digestive Wellness & Women's Nutrition

For years, my work has centered on a deceptively simple question: why does something as basic as eating become so complicated for some women as they get older?

Not every woman develops digestive issues in her 40s or 50s. But this is often the stage when women tell me they've become much more aware of how meals, stress, digestion and evening routines affect the way they feel later. And one complaint deserves more attention than it gets: my stomach is making bedtime harder.

When that happens, I don't automatically ask what we should add at bedtime to make this person sleepier. I first want to understand what's happening in the hours leading up to bed.

  • How comfortable is digestion?
  • How large was dinner?
  • Does she feel unusually full?
  • Is she dealing with gas, bloating or reflux?
  • Has she become afraid to eat certain foods because she already knows what the night might look like?

That changes the conversation.

"When a woman tells me she has reorganized her entire evening around preventing digestive discomfort, I don't dismiss that as simply a sleep problem. I want to understand what her digestive system is doing before she gets into bed."

The Gut and Sleep Don't Exist in Separate Rooms

For years, consumers were encouraged to think about sleep almost exclusively as something that happens in the brain. Can't sleep? Make yourself sleepy.

But the body doesn't work in isolated compartments. Your gastrointestinal system and nervous system communicate continuously — scientists commonly describe this two-way network as the gut–brain axis.

Research into the microbiome and sleep is still developing, and it shouldn't be oversimplified. Researchers have observed relationships between sleep patterns, gastrointestinal physiology, stress pathways and the intestinal microbiome. Some newer work has explored possible bidirectional causal relationships between particular microbial groups and insomnia — which does not establish that a probiotic supplement treats insomnia.

There's also a much simpler point that requires no microbiome theory at all: physical discomfort is not especially compatible with relaxation.

A stomach that feels bloated, overly full, gassy, reflux-prone or simply unsettled gives you something to notice precisely when you're trying to stop noticing your body. And after enough bad nights, another layer usually appears: anticipation.

  • "Will my stomach act up tonight?"
  • "Should I have eaten that?"
  • "What if I wake up again?"
  • "Why can't I just sleep?"

Now the digestive discomfort and the sleep anxiety can reinforce each other.

Making yourself sleepy and making your body comfortable are not necessarily the same thing.

How the loop tends to run

  1. Digestive discomfort
  2. Harder to settle
  3. Fragmented, poor night
  4. Next-day stress and hypervigilance
  5. Greater awareness of digestive sensations

and the cycle begins again

The gut–sleep relationship may be bidirectional. Digest+ is positioned to support normal digestive function — not to treat insomnia.

What May Be Happening When Your Gut Follows You to Bed

Four things worth understanding before you decide what to change.

Dinner doesn't stop existing when you get into bed

Your digestive system is still doing its job long after the plate is gone. If a meal leaves you feeling overly full, bloated or gassy, those sensations can become considerably more obvious once you're lying quietly in the dark.

Physical sensations compete with switching off

When you're trying to sleep there's very little external distraction. A stomach sensation you barely noticed while watching television can feel much more prominent at midnight. For someone who has already had a run of bad nights, that sensation quickly becomes here we go again.

Your gut and nervous system communicate in both directions

The gut–brain axis provides multiple pathways through which the gastrointestinal and nervous systems talk to each other. That does not mean every case of insomnia originates in the gut. It does mean it's overly simplistic to pretend digestion, stress and sleep have nothing to do with one another.

The goal isn't sedation — it's better digestive support

A digestive supplement shouldn't promise to knock you out. What it can reasonably aim to support is normal digestion, digestive comfort, nutrient utilization and gastrointestinal balance. For the woman whose uncomfortable stomach has become part of her bedtime routine, that's a fundamentally different strategy.

The 5 Things I Look For in a Daily Digestive-Support Formula

Before any product name comes up, this is the checklist I use.

More than a random probiotic

Why it matters

Gut health has become almost synonymous with probiotics. But digestion involves much more than bacteria alone.

What I look for

A formula that addresses several aspects of digestive support, rather than adding one probiotic strain and calling it complete.

Support for the actual process of digestion

Why it matters

Before we start on microbiome theory, food first has to be broken down.

What I look for

Digestive-enzyme support and ingredients chosen to complement normal digestive processes.

Ingredients chosen with comfort in mind

Why it matters

The woman I'm describing isn't searching for maximum gut optimization. She wants her stomach to feel less like the centre of her entire evening.

What I look for

Ingredients with a rational role in supporting normal digestive comfort, such as ginger and peppermint.

Nutritional support that goes beyond the gut

Why it matters

Women who have started restricting foods because they're afraid of symptoms become very focused on what they're removing. I also want to think about what's going in.

What I look for

A sensible micronutrient component alongside the digestive support.

A formula you can actually use consistently

Why it matters

A perfect supplement that requires a 14-step protocol usually becomes a supplement you stop taking.

What I look for

A straightforward daily serving that fits into a routine you already have.

One Formula That Checks Several of Those Boxes

This is where Digest+ caught my attention. Not because it promises to cure insomnia — it doesn't, and I'd be immediately skeptical of any digestive supplement that made that promise.

I like it because it approaches digestive support from several complementary angles in one daily formula.

Digest+ daily digestive support, 60 capsules

Why Digest+ stood out to me

  • Digestive enzymes The Digestive Comfort & Soothing Blend contains bromelain and DigeZyme®, chosen to complement normal digestive processes.
  • Ginger and peppermint Two familiar botanicals, included as part of the 325 mg digestive comfort blend.
  • Probiotic support The formula contains LactoSpore® Bacillus coagulans, listed at 6 billion CFU.
  • Magnesium Each serving provides 200 mg of magnesium from magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate.
  • Nutrient support Digest+ also provides vitamin D3, active forms of B6, folate and B12, plus zinc, iron and biotin.

If you're looking for another product whose main job is to make you sleepy, this isn't the one I'd choose. But if you've started wondering whether the stomach you take to bed with you deserves more attention, Digest+ is a thoughtfully constructed daily digestive-support formula worth considering.

What the Research Actually Says About the Gut and Sleep

Enough science to take the hypothesis seriously — and an honest account of where the evidence stops.

Observed relationship

The gut and sleep appear to interact

Research increasingly supports communication between sleep biology and gastrointestinal and microbiome biology. One reason the field is interesting is that the relationship appears to be bidirectional, rather than simply gut causes sleep problems.

That nuance makes this page more credible, not less — it also means no direction of cause has been settled.

Animal research

Microbiome manipulation has changed sleep architecture in animals

In a mouse model, chronic antibiotic-driven microbiota depletion altered intestinal metabolites and was associated with changes in sleep and wake architecture, including REM and non-REM sleep.

This is animal research. It does not show that taking a probiotic improves human insomnia.

Genetic analysis

Large human genetic analyses have explored potential causal links

A large Mendelian-randomization analysis has investigated potential relationships between gut microbial taxa and insomnia. The important word is potential.

Mendelian randomization can strengthen causal inference, but it is not a randomized clinical trial showing that changing someone's microbiome with a supplement will cure insomnia.

The science gives us good reason to take the gut–sleep relationship seriously. It does not give us permission to call a digestive supplement an insomnia cure.

Digest+ should be judged on what its formula can reasonably support: normal digestion, digestive comfort, gut wellness and nutrient support. Not sedation. Not treatment of insomnia.

Research described above concerns digestive physiology, sleep and/or individual ingredients, and does not establish that Digest+ itself improves insomnia. No finished-product clinical trial for insomnia has been conducted on Digest+.

Before Digest+, I had basically built my entire evening around avoiding another bad night. I would eat early, skip certain foods, and pay attention to every little feeling in my stomach once I got into bed. What I love most is that I don’t feel like I have to obsess over all of that anymore. Dinner feels like dinner again, and bedtime doesn’t come with the same anxiety it used to.

I’ve tried so many things over the years, especially products meant to help with sleep. Some would make me tired, but I still felt like my body never fully settled down. Digest+ was different because I started using it as part of my evening routine instead of just trying to make myself sleepy. My stomach feels much less ‘busy’ at night, and I’ve noticed I’m waking up feeling more refreshed instead of like I barely slept.

The worst part for me wasn’t even the bloating itself - it was knowing that if my stomach started acting up at night, I was probably going to spend hours tossing and turning. I became so careful about what and when I ate. Since adding Digest+ to my routine, evenings have felt noticeably more comfortable. I don’t go to bed analyzing every sensation anymore, and it feels amazing to finally trust my body a little more.

I honestly forgot what it felt like to just eat, relax, and go to bed without thinking about digestion. For years I was constantly experimenting with different foods, supplements, and routines because I was desperate to stop waking up exhausted. What I appreciate about Digest+ is how simple it has made my routine feel. I feel more comfortable after dinner, less distracted by my stomach when I lie down, and most importantly, I’m starting to feel like my evenings belong to me again.

Questions Women Ask Me About This

    Is Digest+ a sleep supplement?

No. Digest+ is a digestive and nutritional support formula. It isn't a sedative and shouldn't be presented as a treatment for insomnia.

The reason sleep is discussed on this page is that many people notice digestive discomfort most intensely at night, and research continues to examine the interaction between digestion, the gut–brain axis and sleep.

Then why would I consider it if my biggest problem happens at night?

Because the problem you experience at night may begin before you get into bed. If bloating, fullness, gas or an unsettled stomach are part of your nighttime experience, supporting normal digestive function addresses a different part of the problem than a product whose main purpose is to make you drowsy.

I've already tried magnesium. How is this different?

Digest+ does contain 200 mg of magnesium, but magnesium isn't the whole formula. It also contains a probiotic, digestive enzymes, ginger, peppermint and a broad micronutrient component — which is why I'd describe it as a multi-angle digestive formula rather than another magnesium supplement.

    Does Digest+ contain probiotics?

Yes. Digest+ contains LactoSpore® Bacillus coagulans, listed on the Supplement Facts panel at 6 billion CFU.

    Does it contain digestive enzymes?

Yes. The Digestive Comfort & Soothing Blend contains bromelain and DigeZyme®, alongside ginger and peppermint.

    How do I take it?

Adults take two capsules daily with 6–8 ounces of water, or as directed by a healthcare professional.

The product information does not specify taking it at bedtime, so we don't recommend it as a bedtime supplement.

How long does one bottle last?

One bottle contains 60 capsules. At the recommended two-capsule daily serving, that's 30 servings.

Can I take Digest+ every day?

The suggested use is two capsules daily for adults. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Who should talk to a healthcare professional first?

Consult a physician if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition. If you take prescription medication or have an ongoing health condition, discuss any new supplement with a qualified healthcare professional.

    Why does Digest+ contain iron?

Each serving contains 18 mg of iron as ferrous bisglycinate chelate. Not everyone needs supplemental iron, so this is worth checking before you start.

Warning: accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six. Keep out of reach of children.

    When should I expect results?

Individual experiences vary with diet, baseline digestive health, medications and other factors. Consistency matters more than any promised timeline.

If you're experiencing persistent insomnia, it deserves medical evaluation rather than the assumption that your gut is the sole cause.

    The bottom line

Stop Treating Bedtime Like the Problem Starts at Bedtime

If your nights have turned into a complicated routine of eating earlier, avoiding foods, checking your stomach and searching for something that will finally make you sleepy enough, one question is worth asking.

Have you been focusing exclusively on sleep while ignoring digestion?

That doesn't mean your gut is the cause of your insomnia. And it certainly doesn't mean one supplement can solve every reason people struggle to sleep.

But if digestive discomfort is one of the things you consistently notice at bedtime, it makes sense to give digestive support a place in your routine.

Digest+ stands out to me because it doesn't rely on a single hero ingredient. It combines probiotic support, digestive enzymes, ginger, peppermint, magnesium and micronutrient support in one daily formula.

For the woman who isn't looking for another way to knock herself out, but wants to pay more attention to what her gut is doing before bedtime, that makes Digest+ a formula worth considering.
